HE is the collective title given to courses that start at Level 4. In other words they are advanced courses which require Level 3 qualifications or other qualifications such as Access.
Universities vary in size from those with fewer than 4,000 students to those with over 10,000, and teach a wide range of courses. Higher education colleges and institutes are smaller than the universities. Some run similar programmes to the universities, and others specialise in just a few subjects.
Bachelors' degrees are sometimes known as First Degrees because students may choose to go on to postgraduate study. You might want to progress as far as:
- Postgraduate certificates and diplomas
- Master's degrees
- and Doctorates (eg PhD or DPhil). All are advanced academic programmes for students who already have a good first degree. They are offered by universities and by some HE colleges and institutes.
