Young Learners - FAQs

None of my friends is thinking about higher Education. Why should I?

Higher Education is about you making decisions about your future. If you feel like you will miss your friends, you needn't move away from home to study. But if you do move away, you can still stay in touch. You'll see them on holidays. Plus you'll make loads of new friends. Guaranteed.

My parents say I should just get a job. Are they right?

On average, those with a Higher Education qualification earn 50% more than those who don't. Many jobs over the next 10 years will require a Higher Education qualification. Choosing Higher Education is a positive step. You're making a serious investment in yourself and your future. Talk to your parents and tell them your plans.

My parents say they can't afford to send me to college or Uni what can I do?

There is a variety of financial help available. You or your parents need to find out from your Local Education Authority (LEA) what help you are entitled to. Remember as well that students get discounts on things like rail travel and cinema tickets. And on campus, the bars and facilities are cheap, cheap, cheap. Here is a useful link to the Surrey County Council Support Available to Students page which contains up-to-date financial information:
